John Murray: “which is prior, faith or repentance? It is an unnecessary question and the insistence that one is prior to the other is futile. There is no priority. The faith that is unto salvation is a penitent faith and the repentance that is unto life is a believing repentance” (= ) - ‘Redemption Accomplished and Applied’, hal 113.
‘Westminster Confession of Faith’, Chapter XV: ‘Of Repentance unto Life’ (= Tentang pertobatan kepada hidup).
1) Repentance unto life is an evangelical grace, the doctrine whereof is to be preached by every minister of the Gospel, as well as that of faith in Christ (= ).
2) By it, a sinner, out of the sight and sense not only of the danger, but also of the filthiness and odiousness of his sins, as contrary to the holy nature, and righteous law of God; and upon the apprehension of His mercy in Christ to such as are penitent, so grieves for, and hates his sins, as to turn from them all unto God, purposing and endeavouring to walk with Him in all the ways of His commandments (= ).
3) Although repentance be not to be rested in, as any satisfaction for sin, or any cause of the pardon thereof, which is the act of God’s free grace in Christ; yet it is of such necessity to all sinners, that none may expect pardon without it (= ).
4) As there is no sin so small, but it deserves damnation; so there is no sin so great, that it can bring damnation upon those who truly repent (= ).
5) Men ought not to content themselves with a general repentance, but is every man’s duty to endeavour to repent in his particular sins, particularly (= ).
6) As every man is bound to make private confession of his sins to God, praying for the pardon thereof; upon which, and the forsaking of them, he shall find mercy; so, he that scandalizeth his brother, or the Church of Christ, ought to be willing, by a private or public confession, and sorrow for his sin, to declare his repentance to those that are offended, who are thereupon to be reconciled to him, and in love to receive him (= ).
Dr. Kelly:
“Repentance can be used to mean the same thing as conversion, when faith is assumed” (= ) - hal 59
“Conversion is the broader act of turning in faith and repentance. Repentance can refer to the ethical activity of the saved person, characterized by turning away from sin and seeking after holiness” (= ) - hal 59.
Dalam Perjanjian Lama orang Israel sering melakukan pertobatan hanya menggunakan upacara lahiriah, seperti berpuasa, mengenakan kain kabung, meletakkan debu di kepala dsb (Ester 4:16 1Raja 21:27 Yes 58:5 Yunus 3:6,8 Neh 9:1 Daniel 9:3
Nabi-nabi sering menegur supaya hal-hal itu tidak dilakukan hanya sebagai hal lahiriah / semu tanpa perubahan hidup (Hos 6:4-6 Yes 58:5-7 Yoel 2:13).
Calvin sering berdoa: “Lord, help us to hate our sins enough to turn from them and quit doing them” (= ) - hal 64

Dabney (hal 651) berkata bahwa dalam bahasa Yunani ada 2 golongan kata yang kalau diterjemahkan ke dalam bahasa Inggris, artinya sama-sama adalah ‘repentance’ (= pertobatan). Yang pertama adalah METAMELOMAI dan METAMELEIA, yang kedua adalah METANOEO dan METANOIA. Yang pertama artinya adalah ‘regret, a merely natural feeling’ (= penyesalan, semata-mata perasaan alamiah). Yang kedua adalah ‘change of mind after conduct’ (= perubahan pikiran setelah tingkah laku).
Dalam METAMELEIA ada rasa takut atau malu karena dosa, tetapi ini hanya bersifat egois; sedangkan dalam METANOIA ada kesadaran akan kekotoran dari dosa dan ada rasa benci / jijik terhadap dosa (Dabney, hal 653).
